If you live in any of these areas, then you can score free smart thermostats, energy saving kits and more! For example, in Wisconsin, I have gotten lots of freebies from Focus on Energy, such asfree light bulbs, faucet aerators, shower heads, smart power strips, and more. When I lived in California, I got free lamps from SCE, and of course most areas have energy saving rebates as well.

I’ve put together this list. But, if you’re not in any of these areas you should still do a search on your area! Because, you may find that you’re eligible for freebies you didn’t even know about.
CA
Southern California Gas Company has a free energy saving starter kit designed to help you save energy and water. It includes faucet aerators and a low-flow shower head.
Account information is required, and you can order a kit once every three years.
D.C.
PEPCO Energy Customers in Washington, D.C., can request a free energy saving kit with a free energy checkup. Virtual checkups are available!
ID
If you’re in Idaho and use Idaho Power, you can get a variety of energy efficient products for free with a home energy audit. Of course, what you get will depend on how you answer their survey. You will need to enter your account information. This one is limited to one per household. No end date posted for the program so order now!
IL
If you’re an Ameren Illinois customer, then you can get a discounted thermostat starting at $10.
Nicor Gas customers can get a free energy kit by mail. You can choose from a Free Water-Saving Kit, or a Free Weatherization Kit. The water-saving kit includes 1 or 2 low-flow showerheads, 1 or 2 bathroom faucet aerators, 1 dual-spray kitchen faucet aerator, a Shower timer and Plumber’s tape. Meanwhile, Nicor Gas customers can order up to two free weatherization kits, which include: 12-pack of outlet and switch foam gasket, 17′ roll of closed cell foam tape weatherstripping, 17′ roll of V-seal type weatherstripping, a Self-adhesive door sweep, and 30′ roll of rope caulk.
IN
Indianapolis Power company (IPL) customers can get a free energy savings kit. You can pick from one of the three kit options to find the upgrades that are right for your home. Each kit includes free energy-saving products like:
- Three 9W LED bulbs
- One LED night light
- One filter whistle
- One faucet aerator
- A $10.00 gift certificate to The Home Depot
Simply complete a Home Energy Inspector (10 quick questions), and you’ll get your kit within 2 weeks.

Georgia Power Marketplace has discounted smart home products to help you save energy.

Duke Energy is giving people (even non-customers) Free Energy Kit every 3 years. This includes homeowners in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky with children attending schools participating in The Conservation Caper and Energy Agents programs. The kit includes LED bulbs, LED night light, shower head, faucet aerators, glow ring toy and more.

DTE Energy in Michigan is a provider of gas and electric power. Through October 31, 2020, if you signed up to participate you received a Google Nest Mini (one per household), while supplies last.
You can still sign up for a free energy efficiency kit if you qualify.

If you’re a Potomac Edison customer in Maryland, then you can score discounts and rebates on ENERGY STAR-certified CFL, LED light bulbs and lighting fixtures. Plus, if you schedule a free Quick Home Energy Checkup with them, then you can get up to $75 worth of energy saving products installed by an energy expert!

Minnesota Energy Resources customers can get free water conservation kits, and Centerpoint Energy natural gas customers can get free energy efficiency kits.

For example, your kit will include LED bulbs, LED nightlight, weather-stripping, 8 light switch gaskets to insulate your switch covers, and 18 power outlet gaskets. Must be a current customer. Limit one kit every year.
Columbia Gas customers in Worthington can get a free energy efficiency checkup and find rebates on their website.

In Oregon, Portland General Electric or Pacific Power customers, and NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas or Avista customers can get a free Energy Saver Kit. In Washington state, NW Natural customers can also request the free Energy Saving Kit.
Smart Thermostat Rewards—If you have a qualifying Nest, ecobee or Honeywell smart thermostat, enroll in a rewards program from PGE and PGE will send you up to $75. You can stay comfortable, save energy and help lower demand during peak hours.
Additionally, customers of these same power companies can also get ENERGY STAR appliance rebates in Oregon and Washington.
And, there are cash back programs for homeowners in Oregon and Washington. Find them all under Residential.
PA
Residential customers of Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, and West Penn Power, First Energy Customers have access to rebates, money saving tips and more.
Conversely, Southeastern Pennsylvania PECO income-qualified customers can request a free energy saving kit. This kit will include items such as dimmable candelabra style LED bulbs, water-saving faucet aerators, a low flow showerhead, a smart power strip, and LED night lights.
RI, NY & MA

VA
Columbia Gas of Virginia will send a free energy efficiency kit to customers with submission of a home energy evaluation. If you’ve already filled out an evaluation, then you may be able to get another kit by keeping your profile up to date. Of course, cash back rebates are also available.
WI
If you’re in Wisconsin, then take the Focus on Energy survey. After that, choose one of the free energy savings kits that best fits your needs. For instance, this free kit contain a mix of LED bulbs, faucet aerators, high efficiency showerhead, power strip. pipe insulation, and more. You can do this once every 3 years.
They also offer rebates up to $4 when you purchase energy efficient light bulbs.
WV
West Virginia can do a free Home Energy Analyzer from FirstEnergy.
What if Your Area is Not Listed?
Sometimes lists are hard! So, if you’re not in this list don’t worry. You can start by searching Emerson’s website for your area. And, check out Ecobee’s rebates website for your area. Of course, you’ll also want to look for Energy Star rebates.
