When I was a kid, growing up on a hobby farm in Wisconsin, we had chickens. I loved them! Recently with the rising cost of eggs, I thought ‘why not get more chickens?’ My parents still own the farm, and my dad mentioned that he, too, would like to get chickens again.
It all came together when I noticed an ad on Facebook Marketplace for free chickens! I hurried to send her a message, and she chose me to get them. YAY!
Since it’s been a number of years, I wanted to brush up on my poultry knowledge. So, I joined a few Facebook groups and started looking for good books. That’s when I happened upon this free book on Amazon.
For example, there are many things you can stock up on to ensure your flock will be healthy and happy. But, a lot of those things aren’t really necessary. I struggled between trying to save money on expensive eggs by getting backyard chickens, and spending hundreds of dollars on chicken toys, coops, runs, nesting boxes, and medicines. Joining the Facebook groups with millions of newbie chicken people was shocking! Many people post the most dire situations, from predator attacks to disease. But for the average chicken owners – you will never see most of that. The groups are a concentrated amount of people looking for help that might send the wrong message, and even scare you away. When in reality, those things don’t happen often (but can, of course). My point is, it’s good to be aware and prepared, but that might be overly scary.
