What the heck is DTF?
What is DTF you ask? Good question. I had to look it up! In my research, I found that it means Direct To Film. Luckily, that doesn’t mean what I first thought, which was a bad movie that didn’t make it far in the theater and went direct to video. Nope, that’s not it.
According to Brildor.com, DTF stands for Direct To Film. This technique involves printing your design directly onto a film and then transferring it to a T-shirt made of cotton, polyester, or their blends, regardless of their colour, as it can work with white ink.
So, basically, this is a fancy t-shirt transfer. I’m excited to try it!
DTF, not to be confused with DTG which is Direct to Garment (which is where the printer prints directly onto the garment).
Also not to be confused with sublimation printing, in which instead of liquid ink being printed onto fabric or film, a solid ink substance transitions from a solid state directly to a gas without ever becoming a liquid. The image is printed onto transfer paper and then transferred to the fabric. The ink is heated until it blends right into the fibers of the fabric.
