I must admit, I love dogs. Or, is that “must love dogs.” If I were on a dating app, my profile would have to say that! I think that’s what the movie was about, but it’s been a long time. lol
I have two chocolate labs: Ginger Ann and Jersey Sue. Yes, they have middle names. Sometimes, you just have to middle-name them when they don’t listen!
As to be expected with Labradors, my girls are no exception. They love carrying things in their mouths, they fret when you leave for .002 seconds, and they are among the most loyal and wonderful pets I’ve ever had.
Jersey is half Australian Shepard, so she is a special kind of crazy. We adopted her when she was a year old. She was given away on Marketplace because she was naughty. She ran away all the time, and basically was never off her tether. Her former family had a child with cystic fibrosis, so their time and attention could not be devoted to Jersey. To put it mildly, she was a wild child.
The first day I got Jersey, I let her outside and she ran directly to the neighbor’s house, across the corn field, where they had a pet rabbit in a cage outside. The cage had to roof. I will not continue the sad ending to that story, but you get the picture. Mom (me) paid the neighbors so they could replace the rabbit with two more and a new cage. Mom was not happy with Jersey, and frankly was a little traumatized. Don’t get me wrong, the rabbit wasn’t even torn-up, it had a heart attack. But, the end result is the same. Bad dog!
Jersey was a runner. She wanted nothing more than to RUN. It took me a few months to realize what she wanted/needed. She would get out and run away; nothing would stop her or keep her in the yard. I thought about installing a fence. We tried the collars. My daughter took her to obedience classes through 4-H. Nothing would contain this girl! Until one day, I drove out of the driveway and Jersey followed. She ran away. I caught up to her in my car and noticed she wasn’t running away from me, she was RACING me! From then on, I would let her out in the country, and she would run alongside my car while I carefully – very carefully – drove alongside her. She would run for miles! Running off that excess energy was just what she needed to become a great dog! She is older now, which also helps, but she sure turned into a wonderful companion.
