Past Penny Markdown Highlights

While browsing through past penny lists, keep an eye out for:

Seasonal Treasures: Christmas, Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, and Halloween items, for example, are almost guaranteed to go through a markdown process and eventually penny. Look for markdowns on seasonal apparel, party supplies, stationery, costumes, home decorations, and more.
Household Essentials: Items like bedding sets, kitchen tools, and home decor are frequently marked down. Examples include comforter sets, candles, and kitchen gadgets. This is especially true of things from a past season. Be sure to see the section on how to read Dollar General tags to learn how to spot a past-season item.
Everyday Snacks and Treats: Candy and snacks, such as chocolate bars, mints, savory snacks, beef jerky, and even applesauce and pudding could make the penny list.
Personal Care Items: Be on the lookout for discounts on makeup, skincare, lotions, baby products, and other personal care essentials.

What is Dollar General Penny List?

While some stores don’t know how to do clearance, DG is one of the best. Penny Items are just what they sound like, they’re marked down to only 1 cent! Keep reading to learn why they do this, and how you can find them all!

How Can You Get Products for a Penny?

Get there early! Try getting to the store right when they open on Tuesday (or whichever day it is, based on the sale, your location and whether Tuesday was a Holiday).

Scan EVERYTHING! You can use the scanner on the free Dollar General app. Find it in the Apple App store or Google Play. TIP: Sign into your account and the scanner works better! Stores should have a free guest wifi account that you can use too. Because, internet in stores can drain your battery fast – and may not work at all because of the type of building.

If you scan something and it gets an error or says something like, “this can’t be sold at the store and to give to an associate,” then double check that you are on the correct store in the app!

If you are on the correct location (the store that you’re at), then try using the list scanner instead of the main page scanner. Find it by tapping LIST at the bottom of the app, and using the scanner there. For some reason the app has been glitching.

Know Your Store Type

There are a few things you should know about finding pennies. First, know your store. There are different types of stores, for example, regular DG, NCI, and DGX.

What’s a Dollar General NCI store? An NCI (non-consumable initiative) store is a home store which carries more interior decorating and decor items and not consumables such as food. They’ve honed some DG stores into home stores to carry home, domestics, housewares, party and occasion. Whereas, a DGX store which is more like a convenience store with very little home decor or clothing.

How can I tell if it’s an NCI store? To find an NCI stores in your area, tap the 3 lines on bottom right of the official DG app, select Stores, then tap Filter, select DG Finds, and Apply.

Another term you’ll hear about Dollar General, is POG which means Plan-o-Gram. This is a type of retail merchandising where they strategize the best way to display products. They develop a visual plan, called a planogram, to plan how products are placed on shelves in effort to increase sales.

Why Are Items a Penny? Is it a Clearance Sale?

Penny Items at Dollar General have either been hard to sell, are discontinued products or after Holiday closeouts.

Maybe in some areas, a certain product doesn’t sell. DG will mark them down in steps, all the way down to 90% off clearance. Then, if there’s any left, they discount them to a penny. But, penny items aren’t really clearance items.

Often, manufacturers will stop making a certain product. Maybe it’s Tide and they want to change the scent. Or, maybe they change the size of the product. Either way, they’ll discontinue the old version. And as a result, they’ll close them out down to the 1¢ sale.

Of course, Holiday close-outs are popular in most stores. For example, after Valentine’s Day, stores close out chocolates and candy, and other holiday-themed items at a step-down sale discount. In other words, they’ll start at maybe 50% off, and after a set amount of time, they’ll increase the discount to 75% off and so on. It’s at the end of those mark-downs that the penny items happen!

The reason Dollar General discounts all the way to a penny is to alert sales associates that it’s time to pull the merchandise from store shelves, to be donated to places such as Goodwill, or to be destroyed. Actually, many people report finding merchandise that has been thrown away by dumpster diving behind Dollar General stores! Of course, we’re not suggesting you do that.

Official Penny Items Policy

Please keep in mind that although DG clearly states in their official policy that items are to be sold, not all stores will comply. Some managers may refuse to sell penny items. We have heard reports of both. Some people are able to find penny items regularly, and some cannot find them. Some readers who work at DG or worked there in the past also shared their very different experiences with penny items.

Per the penny policy, anything that rings up for a penny should be sold to the customer and any remaining on store shelves should be removed immediately.

Where Can I Find Dollar General Penny Items in the Store?

Finding penny items at Dollar General is like going on a treasure hunt! It’s fun and items are not conveniently located in a single clearance aisle. Instead, you’ll need to look all over, throughout the store. Here are some tips to find penny items:

1. Check the Clearance Sections:
The clearance aisle at Dollar General may be hiding a few penny items. But, don’t count on it! Penny items are supposed to be located by store staff and removed from shelves, so items in the clearance section would be first to go.

2. Explore Regular-Priced Areas:
Head over to the regular-priced sections where the items on the penny list would normally be. This is where I’ve found most of the penny items I’ve scored! It’s hard to believe, but they were sitting right where they belonged, just waiting to be snagged by me!

3. Look High and Low:
A little detective work might be required. Carefully inspect the totes on top shelves. They may be waiting to be put on shelves and never made it, or other shoppers may have stashed them there hoping to return for them once they hit that elusive low price. Please note: we do NOT encourage hiding items that are clearanced hoping that they will penny so you can score them. That is not fair to the store or other shoppers.

By using these strategies and being thorough, you’ll increase your chances of uncovering those sought-after penny items.

What are Penny Resets?

Understanding “Penny Resets” at Dollar General

What are “Penny Resets”?

In short, a “Penny Reset” is a pricing procedure that Penny Hunters should know about. When items get marked down to just one cent, they only stay that way until their prices are reset.

How Do Price “Resets” Happen?

A penny reset happens when a store restocks an item and updates its inventory system. Once this process is complete, the item’s price will revert to its original or full price. In practice, this means products that remain from a past season can suddenly become more expensive when new seasonal products arrive, even though they were once marked down to a penny!

Why is This Important?

Understanding the concept of “Penny Resets” can dramatically enhance your shopping strategy. To take advantage of these deals, you have to find the penny items before the reset occurs. Since store personnel are supposed to find and remove those items that were reduced to a penny, this is not always easy!

How Can You Get Products for 1 Cent at Dollar General?

The first rule of penny shopping at Dollar General is NEVER TALK ABOUT PENNY SHOPPING AT DOLLAR GENERAL. In other words, don’t ask the staff if there are any penny items. Don’t ask them to check in the back. Don’t call the store and ask. And, don’t hide items before they penny so that you can buy them. Be fair and be polite.

Second, check the current list of Penny Items. Then, check older lists! Sometimes things stay a penny for a while but then go back to the regular price. It pays to check!

Third, if you find penny items on the floor (in-store, at DG), then take all that you want. This isn’t the time to be cordial and ‘leave some for the next guy.” While that may sound harsh, if you look at the policy you’ll understand. As soon as they know there are penny products on shelves they will go immediately to remove them. There will be no “next time.”

Fourth, if staff refuses to sell you penny items, then report it to corporate. Don’t argue or fight with staff. Couponers have already been given a bad name by store employees for misbehaving. You win some, you lose some.

Finally, it’s important whether it’s a gray dot, a yellow square or a blue triangle! If noted, you’ll want to pay attention to that on the tag. Some of the markdowns will specify.

1. Use Store Apps: Many, if not most retailers have apps that offer exclusive deals and promotions. These may or may not include clearance items. But, keep in mind that items on clearance went through a markdown cycle first. So, if you see them on sale they may eventually go on clearance. Another great practice is to scan barcodes in-store with the store’s app to reveal hidden discounts that are not marked on a price tag or the shelves.

2. Follow Price-Coding Patterns: Familiarize yourself with the pricing codes or tag colors that indicate clearance at specific stores. This sounds harder than it really is! Many stores use yellow tags for clearance, for example. On the flip side, don’t be sucked in my colored tags that make things “seem” like they’re a better markdown than they are. Some stores use tags to call attention to lower prices, when they’re not really that great of a deal!

3. Visit Clearance Sections Regularly: I have to laugh when my daughter and I enter a Walmart store, we b-line straight for the clearnace section. Different stores locations have their clearance aisle in different places. For example, some Walmart stores clearance aisles are right in the middle of the store. Some, have their clearance aisle in or near the lawn and garden area, or where seasonal items are displayed. And, it may also vary due to the type of clearance. Seasonal, holiday items may be clearanced somewhere different or in addition to their regular clearance aisle. Finally, some end-caps (the end of the aisle) may have a clearance section, randomly throughout the store. Be sure to look around!

4. Shop Off-Peak Hours: Early mornings or late evenings are often the best times to hunt for deals, as stores may restock or update clearance items during these hours. I’ve found some of the best clearance items just before closing time or when they first open! I found a ton of 3-cent makeup at Walmart once, right before the store closed. What an amazing score that was!

5. Sign Up for Email Alerts: Subscribe to newsletters from your favorite stores to receive notifications of upcoming sales and clearance markdowns. But, to be honest, the best steals you will find will not be sent out like this to everyone. I’m not discouraging signing up; there’s no reason not to if it’s free! But, don’t rely solely on this to be alerted of major clearances. You’re better off following a blog like ours to get a heads up.

6. Ask Sales Associates: While asking a Dollar General employee about Penny Items is NOT a good idea (don’t do it!) You can try asking employees if they know of inside information on when new clearance markdowns are typically made. They may or may not know, or they might know and not tell you! Of course, the general rule of thumb is to always be nice!
