National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Since then, each subsequent president has issued an annual proclamation commemorating the third Friday in September as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
A national-level ceremony is held on every National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Traditionally held at the Pentagon, it features members from each branch of military service and participation from high-ranking officials.
In addition to the national-level ceremony, observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities.
No matter where they are held, these National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies share the common purpose of honoring those who were held captive and returned, as well as those who remain missing.
Since 1999, the POW/MIA Accounting community has created a poster commemorating National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The annual edition of the poster continues to honor this tradition.
The poster is usually designed by the DPAA and features a unique design every year. The poster is distributed to military installations, government offices, and other organizations across the United States. The poster serves as a reminder to all Americans to never forget the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The poster also provides information about the ongoing efforts to locate and identify the remains of missing service members. It serves as a symbol of hope and a call to action for all Americans to help support these efforts and ensure that the sacrifices made by our service members are never forgotten.
You have the option of ordering the small 11″x16″ poster in increments of 2, 5, 10, 20, or 40 or the large 20″x30″ poster in increments of 2, 5, or 10. If you want more posters than the given increments or both small and large posters, you will have to place multiple orders. E.g. if you want 40 small posters, you will have to place two orders of 20 posters each. If you want 2 large posters and 5 small posters, you will have to place two orders, one for the large posters and one for the small posters.
