URGENT! Strawberries Recalled for Possible Contamination
If you’ve purchased any of these frozen fruit products which contain strawberries, then don’t miss this recall! Because the FDA has warned that some could be contaminated with hepatitis A. I’m including information here, but please visit the official FDA site as this could develop into more products or locations.
What is a Recall?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States are the departments responsible for investigating potential problems with food safety. Of course, from their investigations, they may issue warnings to the public. In other words, a Recall by the FDA or CDC means that the product in question is unsafe for the specified reason. Additionally, guidelines and instructions are given for each recall, based on the specific threat. For example, they may warn that consumers should not consume the product. Or, they may suggest that the company responsible is willing to refund the purchase price.
Why is There a Recall?
Willamette Valley Fruit Co, Salem, OR is voluntarily recalling select packages of frozen fruit containing strawberries grown in Mexico due to the potential for Hepatitis A contamination.
What is Hep A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that results from exposure to the Hepatitis A virus, including from food. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months. Illness generally occurs within 15 to 50 days of exposure and includes fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine, and pale stool. In rare cases, particularly consumers who have a pre-existing severe illness or are immune compromised, Hepatitis A infection can progress to liver failure. Persons who may have consumed the affected product should consult with their health care professional or local health department to determine if a vaccination is appropriate, and consumers with symptoms of Hepatitis A should contact their health care professionals or the local health department immediately. For more information on Hepatitis A visit www.fda.gov.
